Whale and dolphin watching - Sri Lanka

whale and dolphin watching sri lanka.jpg

It is almost impossible to try and beat the feeling of exhilaration that you experience when you watch a whale leap out of the water. Observing this gentle creature in its own natural environment seriously is a breath taking experience.

The BBC documentary titled “Ocean Giants” featuring the mesmeric world of Whales and Dolphins, and the scientist’s effort to shed light on their habits and why they grow so large were filmed around Sri Lanka and according to them 30 Blue Whales were sighted in a single day!

There are great chances of spotting Sperm Whales and Blue Whales as their migration path from Africa to Australia is just off Dondra Point. The Explorations Company is able to arrange Whale Watching Trips in a fully insured boat certified by the Coast Conservation Department and will be accompanied by an experienced skipper and crew.

Dondra Point is situated in the South coast of Sri Lanka close to Mirissa fishing harbour. This is the main whale watching area of the island. The season is from December to April and the peak sighting months are, January and February. During the season, there are great chances to spot both Blue and Sperm Whales in the same sail as well as Dolphins such as Spinner Dolphins.

From March to June, Trincomalee is an ideal location from where one can go on whale watching trips. The journey at sea begins from Foul Point and you would sail southwards for 3 to 5 hours. This is a good place to spot Blue Whales and occasionally Humpback Whales as well.

From November to March the west coast of Colombo is a great place if you are interested in seeing Dolphins. It is possible to witness hundreds of Dolphins off the coast of Kalpatiya.

As we arrange utterly bespoke holidays, this experience can certainly be made a part of your program.  You can explore the cultural sites in the North at Sigiriya and Polonoruwa, spend couple of nights at the capital Kandy in a lovely boutique property, travel south to experience tea by staying at a gorgeous planters bungalow, a superb wilderness experience at one of Sri Lanka’s premier national parks finally arriving at Galle.

You can enjoy the beach and also use this as a base from where you can go on a whale watching cruise.  The vessels we use are fully insured and have all the modern communication and safety equipment.
